SAMUEL SAMBO WESTERBY, a wealthy newspaper magnate dies, leaving little wealth. Westerby, a former cricketer and international sportsman, was declared bankrupt in 1937. His death is inevitable and was constantly foreshadowed in TTSS, with Frost and Luke in particular showing what he was in for. His failure resulted in the dismissal of Control Smiley and allies such as Connie Sachs and Jerry Westerby and their replacement by a new guard.
On his return to Hong Kong, Westerby finds Luke murdered in his apartment. Drakes right-hand man Tiu has confused the two Westerners and hence, Westerbys assassination attempt on Drake in The Honorable Schoolboy failed.
We learn that Jerry Westerby, the British journalist-spy in The Honorable Schoolboy, is loosely descended from a person named Westerby who features in the story "Death of a Sportsman".
