Shark Attacks: Why Are They So Rare?

By [Author's Name]

You'd think that sharks would be attacking humans all the time. After all, we're relatively slow-moving and easy to catch compared to fish and seals, a shark's typical prey. But shark attacks are actually quite rare. In fact, you're more likely to be killed by a vending machine than by a shark.

So why are shark attacks so rare? There are a few reasons.

  • Sharks are not typically aggressive towards humans. In fact, most shark attacks are unprovoked. This means that the shark was not attacking the human because it saw them as food. Instead, the shark may have been startled or felt threatened.
  • Sharks have poor eyesight. This means that they often cannot tell the difference between humans and their typical prey. As a result, they may mistake a human for a fish or seal and attack.
  • Sharks live in different habitats than humans. Most sharks live in the ocean, while humans live on land. This means that sharks and humans rarely come into contact with each other.

Despite these factors, shark attacks do still happen. In 2021, there were 73 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide, resulting in 10 fatalities.

So what can you do to reduce your risk of being attacked by a shark? Here are a few tips:

  • Swim in areas where there are lifeguards. Lifeguards are trained to spot sharks and to warn swimmers if there is a danger.
  • Avoid swimming in murky water. Sharks are more likely to mistake you for prey in murky water.
  • Don't swim alone. Sharks are less likely to attack a group of people than a single person.
  • Don't wear jewelry or bright clothing. Sharks are attracted to shiny objects.
  • If you see a shark, stay calm and swim slowly away. Do not make sudden movements, as this could startle the shark.

By following these tips, you can help reduce your risk of being attacked by a shark.
